About the Bauer Brothers
World-renowned masters of botanical illustration, natives of Valtice — Joseph (1756-1830), Franz (1758-1840), and Ferdinand (1760–1826) — are almost unknown in the Czech Republic, despite their precise and beautiful watercolors housed in prestigious museums and university archives."
Their story is closely tied to the history of Valtice under the Liechtenstein family's rule and to the charitable work of Prior Norbert Boccius, botanist and physician of the Order of the Brothers Hospitallers, who played a key role in their success. The brothers contributed over two thousand exquisite botanical illustrations to his unique fourteen-volume collection, known as Codex Liechtenstein.
Joseph served as the painter to the Prince of Liechtenstein and director of his collections in Vienna.
Franz became the court painter of King George III of England and is buried in Kew Gardens, London.
Ferdinand documented flora and fauna during scientific expeditions to Australia and Greece.
In honor of the brothers, the plant genus Bauera, native to Australia, was named by the scientist Sir Joseph Banks.
